A whole new week has started but we need to take a

A whole new week has started but we need to take a moment to appreciate the incredible week we just finished. Claire Porter led another fabulous workshop. It was a beautiful blend of old friends reuniting, new friends meeting and creativity bouncing off the walls.

Julie Davenport, District forester, came and led a walk about the trees on camp and we learned about the past, present and potential future of our forest.

We had a laughter filled community class and and incredible performance that took us indoors and outdoors ending with the reading of a first draft a play written by our retreat artists for the week Sam Kann and C Green. Sam and C set up shop in the lab for the week making beautiful use of the space. And we were fed very well by former retreat artist Sarah Patterson.

What a week! Thank you to all who made this week such a joy.

Our traveling site specific performance, ‘Shine On My Parade’ throughout downtown Mt. Vernon was so engaging and fun, and we are so grateful to the community for showing up and dancing with us! Thank you to @kennebecsavings for making this performance possible!

The four weeks of day camp at Bearnstow are always hectic and full of joy and laughter. Look back with us at the amazing times we had this summer! Our campers are kind hearted, nurturing, curious, creative, and hilarious, and we already can’t wait to welcome them back next year!

This week at Bearnstow we have a workshop with Janis Brenner and Brother(hood) Dance! In residence! It has been a beautiful week where we have really felt the power of community and creativity and we feel so lucky to have this stellar group with us.

And then Friday for a sharing of works in progress by the participants and retreat artists on camp!

Last week Bearnstow hosted a Dance Research Symposium led by Bebe Miller and Laura Faure. There was movement exploration, insightful discussions, and lots of community building over meals overlooking the water 🥹

Meet our 2024 intern cohort! Last but certainly not least, meet Tania!

Tania Reséndiz Guerrero is a dancer, teacher, and choreographer from Querétaro, Mexico. She currently teaches dance at an ice skating school and for a K-Pop dance school, runs her own group Inexir Dance Company, and dances for other groups including Ethérea and Medusa. Tania is excited to connect with herself, the landscape of Bearnstow, and her fellow artists this summer.

Meet our 2024 intern cohort! Next up is Dawn!

Dawn (all pronouns) is an artist, researcher, and dance educator. They are in their fourth year (with one semester left!) at Scripps College completing their degrees in Dance and Psychology. Dawn transferred from the East Coast where he danced with the American University Dance Company for two years and performed in multiple shows and site-specific works. His research centers around dance as a practice of love and the audience-performer relationship. Dawn has a deep connection to the nature of movement/movement in nature and is excited to deepen this connection at Bearnstow this coming Summer.

Bearnstow is in urgent need of a male identifying

Bearnstow is in urgent need of a male identifying counselor for our day camp’s first session. Our campers are aged 6-16 and you will be working alongside 3-4 other counselors in this small local camp. Pay is $500 + room and board for the two weeks (negotiable if applicant has significant experience or lifeguard certification). Spread the word to your networks please!

Meet Bearnstow’s 2024 Intern Cohort! Introducing Clara Kim.

Clara Kim is a dancer and poet living in Brooklyn, NY. Rooted by principles of contact improvisation, postmodern aesthetics and Zen Buddhism, her practice explores sensations of metaphor and paradox as revealed through/in highly incidental danced and written improvisations. She holds a BA from Smith College in Philosophy with a minor in Neuroscience. Dreaming of a free Palestine and a healing planet.

Clara is looking forward to swimming, cooking, having time to write and edit, and being able to metabolize experiences at a slower pace.
